Exploring Environmental Philosophy through the Magic of Plants

Join Dr Clare Lesley Hughes and Rootstock, in conjunction with York Environment Festival, for a guided walk and talk exploring the folklore and magic of native and naturalised plants growing in Britain today.

Find out how humans have collaborated with plants throughout the centuries in medicinal, spiritual, and magical ways, and how we can deepen our understanding of this through environmental philosophy.

By engaging and collaborating with plants in this way, we remind ourselves that we are part of an entangled ecosystem and that plants are not passive background objects, but vibrant and affective. A worldview like this could promote greater empathy and ethical responsibility for the more-than-human world within Western society.

This event will be held four times, with two events at York St John University and two at the University of York. Events are 90 minutes long and start at 11.00am.

These events involve a gentle, short walk on level ground outdoors, so please dress appropriately for the weather on the day. The events are interactive, but there will be no pressure to participate. Children are welcome, but please ensure they are accompanied by a responsible adult if under 14 years of age.
